Beginner guide
Putting basics for beginners
Putting is where rounds are finished — and where beginners often overthink. You need a calm start, not a green-reading degree.
Start here
- Distance before line — a putt that finishes near the hole beats a perfect aim that dies six feet short
- Quiet setup — feet roughly shoulder-width, eyes over or just inside the ball; grip that doesn’t fight you
- One look, then go — endless practice strokes grow nerves
- Short putts count — give three-footers attention; rushing them creates the “tap-in spiral”
On the green with others
Don’t walk on someone’s line. Tend the flag if asked. Mark your ball when it’s in the way. That’s belonging more than perfect stroke mechanics.
Permission
Missed putts are normal. Early nines are for learning how hard to roll the ball on real grass — not for matching a YouTube tempo. Three clubs and a quiet par-3 give you more real putts than a week of tip-chasing.
