Golf grip basics for beginners
Your grip does not need to look like a magazine photo. It needs to be secure enough that the club stays with you, and soft enough that your hands are not white-knuckled.
A simple starting hold
- Place the handle more in the fingers than deep in the palms
- Hands work as a team — overlap or interlock if it feels natural; a ten-finger (baseball) grip is allowed while you learn
- Pressure: imagine holding a tube of toothpaste you do not want to squeeze empty
What “good enough” looks like
- The club face is roughly aimed where you intend at address
- You can waggle without the club slipping
- Your forearms are not locked solid
Permission, not a rebuild
If a teacher wants to change everything about your hands in minute one, slow them down. Play a few holes with a hold that feels secure. Refine later. Grip is a tool for contact — not a personality test.
For early rounds, three clubs and a soft hold beat a perfect grip diagram every time.
