Beginner guide
First golf lesson — what to expect
A first lesson is usually a short, friendly session — often 30–60 minutes — focused on basics that fit you, not a TV swing. Expect conversation, a few simple feels, and balls hit on a range or teaching bay. You will not leave “fixed.” You leave with one or two clear things to practice.
What typically happens
- Quick chat: goals, injuries, how new you are.
- Grip / setup / ball position at a beginner-friendly level.
- Short swings or wedges before anything long.
- Homework: one cue, not twelve tips.
What to bring
Comfortable clothes, sneakers with grip if you don’t have golf shoes, and whatever clubs you have — even three. Many ranges have rentals. Tell the coach you’re a true beginner; good ones won’t shame the bag.
How The First 9 thinks about lessons
Lessons help. They are optional before your first quiet par-3 nine. Play a fitting path first if anxiety is the blocker; take a lesson when you’re curious or stuck. Permission: one lesson isn’t a subscription to the range forever.
