Golf tipping etiquette for beginners
Tipping in golf looks mysterious until you map it to ordinary service. On many quiet public nines, you may tip little or nothing — and that is okay.
Common situations
- Bag drop / cart staff who unload or stage a cart: a few dollars per bag is a common thank-you when they help
- Forecaddie or caddie (less common for brand-new beginners): ask the shop the expected range before you start — do not guess mid-round
- Locker room / shoe staff at private clubs: usually not your first-round world
- Food & beverage: tip like a normal café or cart-girl order
On a simple walk-up par-3
If you carry three clubs, walk, and never meet bag staff, you may not tip anyone except for food. That is not rude. It is a low-service round.
Permission
Cash in small bills helps when tipping applies. If you are unsure, ask the pro shop: “Any customary tips here for a walking nine?” One question beats awkward math on the eighteenth green — or the ninth.
