Double bogey explained for beginners
A double bogey means you finished the hole in two strokes over par. Par 3 + 5 strokes = double bogey. Par 4 + 6 = double bogey. Same idea on a par 5.
Nearby words (optional)
- Bogey — one over par
- Triple bogey — three over par
- Pick-up max — a friendly pace rule (e.g. pick up after a set number) so one hole doesn’t stall the group
Why beginners care
Apps and playing partners may say “that’s a double.” It’s shorthand, not a judgment. On early nines, many players quietly pick up once a hole has already “gotten away” — that protects pace more than polishing a big number.
Permission
Doubles happen to strong players too. Your job early is not a clean card. It’s keeping the group moving and leaving the parking lot wanting another nine. Shrink the stage and the word loses its sting.
