What is a bogey in golf?
A bogey means you finished the hole in one stroke over par. If the hole is a par 3 and you take 4 strokes, that’s a bogey. Par 4 + 5 strokes = bogey. Same idea on a par 5.
Why beginners hear it constantly
TV and scorecards talk in birdies and bogeys. You don’t need that language to enjoy golf. It’s just shorthand. On your first quiet nines, counting total strokes (or using a simple pick-up max) is enough.
Nearby words (optional)
- Par — the expected score for the hole.
- Birdie — one under par.
- Double bogey — two over par.
Permission framing
Bogeys are normal — even for strong players. Your job early on is not a clean card. It’s finishing holes, keeping pace, and leaving wanting another nine. Shrink the stage (par-3 course, three clubs) and bogeys feel less like a verdict.
Know the word. Don’t let it own your day.
