First clubs for beginners: start with three

You are allowed to show up with a light bag. You are not required to buy a shiny 14-club set before you know what you like.

Most intimidated beginners get talked into a driver and a packed bag too early. That creates noise, cost, and pressure on the first tee.

The Sunday Bag (three clubs)

  • Putter — you will use it every hole.
  • 58° wedge — short game and soft landings around the green.
  • Pitching wedge (PW) — your “full” club for par-3 distances.

That trio is enough to play a relaxed par-3 nine, learn distance control, and feel like you belong — without hauling a store’s worth of options.

Budget without the trap

Aim for a used kit around $280–$380 with simple caps so you stay in control (bag / putter / 58 / PW). No clubs are shipped from The First 9 — education only.

What you are NOT buying first

  • No driver required to start
  • No “must-have” full set
  • No years of gear research before your first tee time

Wrong clubs already? Normal. Pause new purchases until you know the three-club plan. Then buy once, used if you can, with caps.
