How to play a par-3 nine as a beginner
A par-3 nine is the friendliest first stage. Shorter holes. Less walking pressure. Room to learn without a packed back-nine.
Before you go
- Three clubs: putter, 58°, pitching wedge.
- Balls you will not cry over, tees, and water.
- A morning or twilight time when the course is quieter if you can.
On the first tee
Breathe. You belong here. Tell your group you are new if it helps — most people remember being new.
- Pick a safe aim point; ignore hero lines.
- One rehearsal, then hit. Do not take a clinic on the tee box.
- After the shot, walk with purpose. Pace matters more than perfection.
Around the green
Use the 58 for soft chips. Putt when you can putt. Keep the double-hit experiments for the practice green later.
Score (or don’t)
Tracking every stroke is optional on day one. Finishing nine holes with a clear head is the win. Improvement comes from repeating this path — not from buying a driver tonight.
