What is a mulligan?
A mulligan is an unofficial second chance after a bad shot — usually a tee shot. It is not in the Rules of Golf. It’s a social courtesy some groups allow among friends.
How it works in real life
- Someone asks: “Mind if I take a mulligan?”
- The group agrees (or doesn’t).
- You hit again. Scoring varies — some count the second ball only; some count both. Decide before you swing again.
Beginner guidance
On a quiet practice nine with friends: one mulligan early can lower panic. In a busy public tee time with strangers: don’t assume. Ask once. If anyone hesitates, play the first ball and keep moving.
Better than endless mulligans
Shrink the stage instead: forward tees, three clubs, par-3 course. You’ll need fewer do-overs when the hole fits your bag.
Permission to be imperfect beats rewriting every miss.
