Beginner guide
Golf terms for beginners — plain English
People toss jargon like it’s a test. It isn’t. Learn a handful of words so the course feels less foreign — then go play.
Scoring words
- Par — the expected strokes for the hole.
- Birdie / bogey — one under / one over par. Nice to know; not required to enjoy the day.
- Mulligan — informal redo (not official). Ask the group before you take one.
Course words
- Tee box — where you start the hole.
- Fairway — short grass toward the green.
- Rough — taller grass off the fairway.
- Green — very short grass around the hole; putter territory.
- Hazard / bunker — sand or water areas with special rules. For early rounds: find the ball, play it or take a simple drop, keep moving.
Club words you’ll hear
- Wedge — short, lofted club for approach and around the green (PW, 58°, etc.).
- Iron — numbered mid clubs. You don’t need a full set on day one.
- Driver — longest club off the tee. Optional for beginners — many start without it.
Pace words
- Ready golf — hit when safe and ready, not always strict “honors” order.
- Playing through — a faster group may pass if you’re holding them up — wave them through calmly.
You belong on the course with three clubs and these words. Permission first; vocabulary second.
