Beginner guide
Can beginners rent golf clubs?
Yes. Renting is a smart, low-pressure way to play before you buy. Plenty of public courses expect beginners to ask.
How to ask
Call or walk into the shop: “Do you rent clubs for a nine? I’m a beginner — anything simple is fine.” That’s enough. You don’t need a handicap story.
What to request
- A light set or half set if they offer one.
- Or: putter + a wedge + a mid iron / hybrid — even if the rental bag has more, you can leave extras zipped.
- Forward tees and a quiet time if they advise.
Rent vs buy (early)
- Rent — first 1–3 course visits while you test interest.
- Buy used three-club Sunday Bag — when you’ve decided you’ll keep showing up; budget often ~$280–$380 for a starter kit, not a warehouse full set.
Watch-outs
Don’t let a pushy “you need the full rental set + driver” talk talk you into overwhelm. Three clubs you understand beat fourteen you fear.
Clear path: rent once, learn the rhythm, then buy small.
