Beginner guide
How much does it cost to start golf?
You can start golf without a $2,000 bag. Most intimidated beginners overspend because they buy a full set before they know what they will actually use.
A realistic first-month budget
- Three used clubs (Sunday Bag): about $150–$280 total — putter, 58°, pitching wedge.
- Balls: a sleeve or used dozen — $5–$20. Cheap is fine.
- Tees + a soft towel: under $10.
- First par-3 nine: often $15–$45 depending on city and time.
- Optional shoes: sneakers with grip are fine at first; dedicated shoes later.
Many people play their first useful nine for roughly $200–$380 all-in if they buy used and skip the driver.
What to skip for now
- New full sets and “complete packages” with a driver
- Rangefinders, launch monitors, and fitting days
- Fancy balls and brand-new shoes
Where the money actually helps
Spend on a calm first nine and a light bag you will carry. That is how you learn whether you even like the game — before gear becomes a second hobby.
