Beginner guide

How long does 9 holes take?

Most beginners ask this because they are scared of being “that slow group.” Fair. Time depends on course type, walking vs cart, and how many balls you hunt.

Rough timing

  • Par-3 nine (walking): often about 1.5–2.5 hours for a relaxed beginner group.
  • Regulation nine (par 35–36): often about 2–3+ hours, longer if crowded.
  • Carts can speed walking between holes; they do not fix indecision over the ball.

How beginners stay on pace

  • Play ready golf when it is safe.
  • Limit lost-ball hunts — drop, take a stroke if needed, keep moving.
  • Three clubs mean fewer club debates.
  • Skip hero shots from woods; punch out or pick up near the green.

Why we push a par-3 first nine

Shorter holes = more finishing, less exhaustion, less clock panic. You learn the rhythm of a round without a four-hour commitment.

If a course posts a pace guideline, treat it as a friendly target — not a test of your worth as a golfer.
