Beginner guide
Lost ball rules for beginners
Losing balls is part of learning. The goal is safety and pace — not a courtroom reading of the Rules of Golf on hole four.
The practical version
- Search about three minutes — then stop. Endless hunting holds up everyone.
- If you think it might be lost or out of bounds, play a provisional (a second ball from the same spot) so you do not walk back.
- On a friendly beginner nine, many groups use a drop near where it went missing and add a stroke — ask your partners what they prefer.
Out of bounds vs lost in the rough
- White stakes / fences often mean out of bounds — usually stroke and distance (play again from where you last played).
- Lost in thick stuff — same idea if you cannot find it: keep play moving with a drop or provisional per your group’s agreement.
Permission
You are allowed to play “ready golf rules” with friends: find it if you can, drop if you cannot, and keep the smile. Learn the formal book later. Today, do not freeze the fairway for a Titleist.
