Golf balls for beginners: keep it simple

You will lose balls. That is not a character flaw — it is geography and a new swing. Buy accordingly.

What to buy

  • Inexpensive two-piece / distance balls — durable, cheap to replace.
  • A sleeve or recycled dozen — enough for a par-3 nine without babysitting every ball.
  • One consistent model so feel stays familiar.

What to skip first

  • Premium tour urethane balls (soft spin, soft wallet)
  • Buying six different brands to “find your ball”
  • Compression charts that postpone your first tee time

On-course habit

Play a provisional when a ball might be lost. Limit hunts. The round matters more than the $2 ball in the weeds.

Ball choice is a small decision. Club count and course type matter more for intimidated beginners.
