Golf range etiquette for beginners

The range looks chaotic until you learn a few quiet rules. None of them require a perfect swing.

Safety first

  • Stay behind the hitting line / mat line. Don’t walk in front of someone mid-swing.
  • Check both sides before you step up. Give neighbors space — roughly a bay’s width if it’s busy.
  • Never throw clubs or hit when someone is retrieving a ball ahead of the line (staff/ball picker rules vary — follow posted signs).

Pace & courtesy

  • Take a bay; don’t hog two bags across empty mats.
  • Keep your bucket contained. Pick up loose balls around your feet when you leave.
  • Phones on low. Coaching sessions happen — give them room.
  • If you’re brand new, start with wedges or a mid iron. Loud full-driver every ball isn’t required to “belong.”

Permission note

Range etiquette is mostly: don’t endanger people, don’t dominate space, leave the bay tidy. You’re allowed to be slow and clumsy while you learn. When you’re ready, connect practice to a real par-3 nine so the range doesn’t become a forever waiting room.
