Stuck or thinking about quitting
Golf too expensive or takes too long? Golf on a budget, in under 2 hours
Golf gets much cheaper and quicker when you stop playing it the expensive way. Play nine holes instead of eighteen, start on par-3 and short courses, book twilight or off-peak tee times, walk when you can, and carry The First 9 Method’s three clubs, bought used. A relaxed par-3 nine often takes about 1.5 to 2.5 hours and is usually cheaper than a weekend eighteen.
Quick answer
- Nine, not eighteen: roughly half the time, and often a lower rate.
- Par-3 and short courses: quicker rounds, fewer lost balls, three clubs cover it.
- Twilight and off-peak: late-day and weekday slots are often cheaper and quieter. Ask the pro shop.
- The First 9 Method, bought used: putter, 52° wedge, 56° wedge. Skip the full set and the driver for now.
- Free practice: putting and chipping at home, and the practice green at many courses.
“Anyone else not able to golf this year because it’s too expensive?” “My kids’ activities have taken over my weekends.” Those are real lines from our analysis of 5,020 public golf forum posts (Reddit posts and comments, 2024–2026; directional, not a survey). Price came up more than any other barrier in that analysis. (That count includes all price talk, not only complaints, so treat it as a rough signal.) If golf has started to feel like a luxury you can’t justify, or a whole Saturday you don’t have, you’re not wrong to notice. You may just be playing the most expensive version of the game.
Why golf feels so expensive and slow
The default version of golf, eighteen holes on a full-length course on a weekend morning with a full bag and a cart, is the priciest and longest way to play. It’s also hard for beginners: long holes, lost balls and a four-hour-plus commitment. Most of the cost and time comes from that format, not from golf itself.
How to play golf on a budget
- Play nine holes. Many courses offer nine-hole rates or tee times. Ask when you book. Nine is a complete round. See 9 holes vs 18.
- Start on par-3 and short courses. They’re typically cheaper than full-length courses, and you’ll lose fewer balls. See pitch-and-putt vs par-3 vs executive.
- Book twilight or off-peak. Late-afternoon and weekday tee times are often discounted and quieter.
- Ask about local deals. Many municipal courses offer resident rates, punch cards or beginner programs. The pro shop will tell you if you ask.
- Walk when you can. On a par-3 course, walking is usually easy and saves the cart fee. See walking vs a cart.
- Carry The First 9 Method, bought used. A putter, a 52° wedge and a 56° wedge. Used is fine. Skip the full set and the driver for now. Budget ranges: how much does it cost to start golf?
- Buy inexpensive balls. You’ll lose some. Used or budget two-piece balls are fine. See golf balls for beginners.
- Practice where it’s free. Putting on a carpet, chipping into a laundry basket in the yard, and the practice green that many courses let paying customers use. Fewer range buckets, more short game.
How to play golf in under 2 hours
Time is the other big off-ramp, especially once work, kids or a move start eating weekends. The fix is the same shape: shrink the format.
- A par-3 nine often takes about 1.5 to 2.5 hours for a relaxed beginner group. Quiet times and smaller groups are faster. Details: how long does 9 holes take?
- Play as a single or a twosome. Fewer players usually means a quicker round.
- Use three clubs. Fewer decisions, less walking back to the bag.
- Set a personal max per hole and pick up when you reach it.
- Play “ready golf.” When it’s safe, whoever is ready hits.
- Skip the long warm-up. Ten putts and five chips is plenty. See beginner golf warm-up.
A two-hour golf week
Here’s what golf can look like when time and money are tight:
- Two 10-minute sessions at home: putting on a carpet to a coin, and slow half swings with an alignment stick on the floor for aim.
- One par-3 or twilight nine: three clubs, walking, about two hours.
That’s it. It keeps golf in your life, keeps the short game sharp, and doesn’t take over the weekend. When life opens up again, eighteen holes will still be there.
Is it worth paying for lessons on a budget?
Lessons help, but they aren’t a gate. If money is tight, one group clinic or a single lesson focused on short game and a simple plan usually beats a long run of private swing lessons. Ask the teacher to spend part of the time on the course. More: when should beginners take lessons?
If you’ve already overspent
That’s common, and it isn’t a character flaw. Don’t sell everything tonight. Pull the putter and your wedges out of whatever you own, pause new purchases, and play a few short nines before deciding what stays. More in The Beginner’s Golf Trap and I bought the wrong golf clubs.
And if golf has to go on the shelf for a season because of money or time, that’s okay too. When you’re ready, there’s a calm way back: coming back to golf after a break.
Frequently asked questions
How can I play golf cheaply?
Play nine holes instead of eighteen, start on par-3 and short courses, book twilight or off-peak tee times, walk instead of renting a cart, ask about resident rates or punch cards, and use The First 9 Method’s three clubs, bought used, with inexpensive balls.
